The Process

How the pieces get made - in Palm Beach County, with decades of design habits and a short list of well-worn apps.

The Studio

It starts with looking

  • Lakeside Design House is a small studio working out of Palm Beach County, Florida.
  • A piece starts here and finishes here, with the same care on it the whole way through.
The work starts with looking.
  • The lagoon at slack tide.
  • Light coming sideways through a palm canopy early in the morning.
  • The old signage, the cottage streets, the breezeblock walls all over this county - patterned concrete that throws lace shadows by afternoon.
  • Most pieces begin as a place somebody local already loves, seen one more time, a little slower.

The Road Here

Paste-up, darkrooms, deadlines

The roots go back to a high school yearbook room in the 1990s, and layout learned when layout was still paste-up boards, waxers, and darkroom prints.

Getting a page to balance - type, photo, white space - was a physical skill before it was a digital one, and it taught the lesson everything since has stood on: a page is built, not decorated.

  • Then came decades of professional graphic and production design.
  • Packaging, posters, publications, brand work - the unglamorous end of the trade, where the discipline is files that print right: correct bleeds, honest color, type that survives the press.
  • Thousands of pages went out the door that way.
  • Living in Florida turned that training loose on this coastline.
  • The production habits stayed.
  • The subject changed completely - to herons, moonlight, mangroves, and the view from the middle of the bridge.

The Toolkit

The apps on the desk

The software is ordinary, and that is the point - the standard kit of the design trade, aimed at one small stretch of Florida.

  • IdAdobe InDesignLayout and print-ready files. Where a finished piece becomes a page a printer can run without a phone call.
  • AiAdobe IllustratorVector drawing and type. The geometric pieces are built here, point by point, which is why the edges stay clean at any size.
  • PsAdobe PhotoshopImage work and compositing. Color gets graded, textures get settled, and nothing goes final with a rough edge left in it.
  • AAdobe AcrobatPreflight. Every file gets checked the way a printer would check it - fonts, color, resolution, bleed - before it goes anywhere.
  • FigmaLayout experiments and quick studies. This website was worked out in Figma before the real thing existed.

New digital tools get tested the same way a new brush would be - tried on real work, and kept only if they earn a place. The eye decides. The craft standards do not move.

Step by Step

How a piece gets made

  1. 1See it. A place, a bird, a wall, a sign - something in Palm Beach County that holds still long enough to be noticed twice.
  2. 2Build it. Geometry first, a limited palette, type treated as picture. The composition gets solved before the detail starts.
  3. 3Check it like a printer. Edges, registration, color, at full size. The production-design habit: if it would fail on press, it fails here first.
  4. 4Print it. 8 × 10 on heavy stock, then checked again by hand before it goes anywhere. A print that is not right does not leave.

Made to Order

Made here, start to finish

Breezeblock days, bridge-view nights.
  • Every print is made to order, in the same studio where the piece was made.
  • No warehouse and no fulfillment service - just the studio, the printer, and one more careful look before a print changes hands in person or goes out in the mail.
  • Grown in Palm Beach.
  • Hung anywhere.
